Forward Kurt Tippett has been ruled out of Sunday's twilight clash with Essendon at AAMI Stadium as he continues to recover from a bout of concussion.

Tippett sustained his third concussion in five weeks in the opening quarter of Adelaide's win over West Coast in round 17. The powerful goalkicker missed the trip to Geelong last weekend and will watch from the sidelines again on Sunday.

Coach Brenton Sanderson said the Club wouldn't take any "unnecessary risk" with Tippett.

“Kurt won’t play this week, but he’s every chance the following week," Sanderson said on Wednesday.

"We’ve always said we’ll make a decision based on what’s best for Kurt. We won’t rush him back because we need to win a footy game - the player’s welfare always comes first. It wouldn’t have mattered if this week was a Grand Final, or any final, Kurt wouldn’t have played.

“It would’ve been foolish to play him this week, so we’ll give him another few days and I’m sure he’ll be up and about the week after. He’s probably still not at the spot, medically, where we’d want him to be (to play) but he’s recovering really quickly. He also needs the confidence that he can train, be hit and bounce up and keep training or playing and that should happen in the next 10 days.

“But if we’re at this point next week and Kurt’s still not in the frame of mind where he wants to go out and play then we won’t play him either.

“When we pass him fit to play and when he’s comfortable to play, we’ll be confident he can play footy just like he did prior to the concussion. With any sort of head injury, you have to be ultra-certain you’re not taking any risks.

"He’s done plenty of testing and those results have all been positive. With a little bit more conditioning, he’s going to be available to play really soon.”

Sanderson said ruckman Sam Jacobs, who also missed the clash with the Cats, was expected to return from a hamstring complaint.

Key defenders Daniel Talia (corked thigh) and Sam Shaw (eye) should also be available.
