Wanganeen happy to hand over mantle
Gavin Wanganeen is delighted to see Andrew McLeod become the AFL's indigenous games record holder
McLeod, who remains the youngster ever Norm Smith medallist and both the youngest and oldest player to win the Crows best and fairest, will become the longest-serving indigenous player in Australian football history when he breaks the games record formerly held by Essendon and Port Adelaide star Gavin Wanganeen.
Wanganeen, a Brownlow medallist and dual premiership player, was the first indigenous player to reach the 300-game milestone and, on Thursday, he said he was happy to hand over the mantle to good mate McLeod.
“Macca’s been a great player for the Adelaide footy club and I actually had a photo with him yesterday. I wish him all the best and, hopefully, there will be more indigenous guys reach the 300-game milestone in years to come because, lets face it, it’s a pretty hard achievement to reach,” Wanganeen said.
“Andrew’s contribution to the game has been unbelievable. I mean, he’s got two Norm Smith medals, two premierships and there are probably a heap more honours on his board too.
“It was a great effort for Andrew to reach the 300-game milestone last week and, equally, to overtake my record this week.
“He’s been a great player and a legend of the Adelaide footy club.”
McLeod has joined Wanganeen in encouraging other indigenous players to break his impending games record, but the modest half-back is poised to retain the title for many years to come.
Swans star Michael O’Loughlin is just 14 matches shy of the 300-game mark, but at age 31, and with McLeod poised to play at least one more season, his chances of snatching the games record are slim.
Fremantle livewire Jeff Farmer, also 31, is next on the list of current indigenous players with 246 games to his name, while dual Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes sits on 226.
Goodes, 28, was the second-fastest man in VFL/AFL history to reach 200 games, but would need to play at least another three injury-free seasons just to reach 300.
