ADELAIDE assistant coach Matthew Clarke says the team was lucky to escape with only one suspension from the match review panel after the win over St Kilda.

He said players had been encouraged to play physical and aggressive football, but that several had "overstepped the mark" on Saturday night.

Four players were charged with offences after the clash at AAMI Stadium.

Defender Richard Tambling will miss the match with Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday after accepting a one-week ban for striking Adam Schneider, while St Kilda full-back Zac Dawson is contesting his one-match suspension at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Crows big men Kurt Tippett and Sam Jacobs both accepted reprimands, Tippett for punching defender Sam Fisher in the stomach, and Jacobs for hitting Jason Gram with an errant elbow to the head.

"I hope [it's] not [a new trademark of the team] because we'll end up with people watching from the stands," Clarke said.

"In the end we're probably lucky to get away with one bloke [Tambling] out for a week. It's a challenge to play aggressive footy, but not overstep the mark and we overstepped the mark.

"A bloke misses a week, so it's not really what we encourage."

Tambling's suspension has come at the worst possible time for the depleted Adelaide defence, which will also be without centre half-back Phil Davis (shoulder), utility Scott Stevens (illness) and attacking defender Andy Otten (knee).
