Green wins his first Melbourne best and fairest

MELBOURNE star Brad Green has capped off a magnificent year by winning his first Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott medal as Melbourne’s best and fairest. After playing for Melbourne for 11 years, this is the first time Green has won the medal. He had a stellar year as wingman/forward for the Dee’s and kicking 55 goals, with his highest being a 5-goal haul against North Melbourne in round 22. Green won the medal in front of James Frawley (second) and Mark Jamar (third).

AFL ponders possibility of play-off wildcards

THE AFL has revealed that they are considering putting in place a “wildcard” playoff system in which the eighth, ninth and tenth spot would playoff for the final spot in the finals. The AFL’s chief operating officer Gillon McLachlan said yesterday that the fans general consensus was not to touch finals but many of the fans were uncertain about the shape of the home and away season in the season’s to come.

Shane Warne has no mercy on drugs

FORMER cricketing great Shane Warne has slammed the AFL’s drug policy following Hawthorn’s Travis Tuck’s suspension due to receiving three strikes under the AFL’s drug policy. Warne said that clubs should be told about player’s drug issues and if they are caught out they should not be given a second chance. He also said that the players should not be given anonymity and the AFL should adopt a one strike and you’re out policy.
AFL Grand Final to be broadcast on 3D TV

AFL boss Andrew Demetriou has confirmed that this year’s AFL Grand Final will be broadcast on channel 7 in 3D. The breakthrough coverage will be shown on September 25 on digital channel 40. Channel 9 will follow suit a week later by screening the NRL Grand Final in 3D.

Akermanis may join Magpie army

TASMANIAN club, the Glenorchy Magpie’s has confirmed they have approached retired Jason Akermanis to be a “fly-in player” for 2011. The salary cap for the Magpies is $65,000 a season, therefore a private sponsor would need to employ the former Bulldogs and Lions star on a part time basis. Glenorchy’s general manager Jaimes Wiggins has confirmed that Aker has said they are the front runners and he won’t commit to any other club until they have approached him with a confirmed offer.
