Crows eyes the biggest prize of all
The Adelaide forward believes the Crows are a serious premiership contender after their 96-point demolition of Essendon on Friday night
The Crows led by just six points at quarter time but – in a carbon copy of last weekend’s performance against Carlton – blitzed the opposition with an awesome display of run, handball and defensive pressure in the second term.
The home side slammed on eight goals to two in the second quarter and added 14 more after half time to take the club’s tally to 53 majors in two weeks.
Tippett, who finished with four goals, said the players had a strong belief in what they could achieve over the next three weeks.
“I believe we can go all the way. We’re not here to make up the numbers and we want to go the whole way, but in saying that we’ll take little steps. We need to focus on winning next week’s game and then we’ll take it from there,” he said after the game.
“The first quarter tonight was always going to be an arm wrestle. It’s good that we were able to stay in the contest and we’ve been able to do that in the past couple of weeks.
“We might get down by a couple of goals early, but we’re hanging around for the long haul. We’ve got the belief we can kick goals quickly and we were able to do that again tonight.”
The Crows matched their effort of 13 individual goalkickers against the Blues with another even spread on Friday night.
Jason Porplyzia (five goals) enhanced his standing as an elite player in the competition while Tippett (four), Chris Knights (three), Brett Burton (three) also benefited from Adelaide’s 59 forward entries.
Tippett, who had the better of experienced Essendon defender Dustin Fletcher, said there was no secret behind his side’s big scores over the past fortnight.
“It’s because of our great ball movement that we’re kicking great scores at the moment,” Tippett said.
“The power of our movement means we have plenty of time to do what we want as forwards and we saw that tonight with everyone contributing. We’re gelling as a forward group and it’s exciting to watch and be a part of.”
The Crows will now prepare to take on the loser of Sunday’s qualifying final between St Kilda and Collingwood.
Tippett said he didn’t have a preference as to which team Adelaide would play.
“We haven’t even thought that far ahead yet. We’ll keep it pretty simple going into next week. We’ve done all the hard work and we’ll just look to go out and execute our style of play again on Saturday night,” he said.
