New chums in the mix for round one
Michael Doughty says several young players can make the side for the round one match against Collingwood
Jared Petrenko, Myke Cook and Broken Hill teenager Taylor Walker are chances to line-up for their first game this week.
“Craigy (coach Neil Craig) is a believer that if you’re playing good footy, you’re a chance to be picked. If you’re in good form and you’re playing in the senior team, it’s hard to get knocked out of it,” Doughty said on Monday.
“We’ve got probably 28 guys to pick from this week, who should be playing. It’s a tough call, but the guys that don’t get picked are expected to go back to their local clubs, to perform and put pressure on the blokes in the A-grade team.”
Defender Graham Johncock has returned home to Port Lincoln after his mother died and will not play. Andy Otten and Patrick Dangerfield, who have each played two games, are in the mix to replace him.
Experienced trio Ben Rutten, Nathan van Berlo and Brad Symes completed training on Saturday and are also pushing for selection, while Jason Porplyzia staked his claim on a spot with a strong showing for SANFL club West Adelaide.
Adelaide’s match committee will have to ponder the number of underdone players it takes into the game.
Porplyzia has played just three-quarters of football since undergoing a shoulder reconstruction last year.
Rutten, Symes and van Berlo have also missed more than a month of football.
Doughty conceded there were "question marks" over the quartet.
“I think if they’re all fit and ready to go come Saturday, they would be a fair chance to play,” he said.
“We do a lot of game simulation at training. It’s a tough decision, but I’m sure the coaches will make the right one. I wouldn’t put a number on how many would or wouldn’t play.”
Saturday afternoon’s game gives Adelaide its first chance to avenge last year’s crushing elimination final loss to an undermanned Collingwood.
And Doughty said his side was ready for the rematch.
“Winning any game at the MCG in round one is a great statement to make,” he said.
"There’s going to be a big crowd there and it’s the first game of the year, so there will be a lot of people watching. We’ll be setting ourselves for Collingwood come Saturday.”
Jared Petrenko is rated a $86,600 defender, Michael Doughty is rated a $375,900 defender, Myke Cook is rate a $86,600 midfielder and Patrick Dangerfield is rated a $115,400 midfielder.
