Brothers remember
Andrew and Darren Jarman recall their memories from the first game in 1991...
Among the many stories that emerged from Adelaide’s first game in 1991, the tale of the two brothers on opposite teams played out at the very first bounce.
As the siren blew to begin the game, Andrew Jarman walked past his younger brother Darren, who was wearing Hawthorn colours for the first time.
Years previous they had played junior games together, and also won a premiership at North Adelaide in the late 80s.
The two lined up on each other in the middle and as the video shows, they stood there in silence with a steely look on their face. But not so, according to Andrew.
“Hey Mummy’s boy, you’re back here, hey,” Andrew recalls. “I’ll tell you what mate, when you get near the ball, I’m gonna punch you in the back of the head.”
Always the one to have the first say, the older of the two Jarman’s took the spoils that night as Adelaide smashed Hawthorn by 86 points.
Darren would go on to have the last laugh later that year by winning the Premiership with the Hawks, and as he remembers he had a night to forget against the Crows.
“I didn’t deal with it (the abuse) very well, the supporters were very angry that I left to go to Hawthorn,” Darren said.
“Being the first game of the year I did get abused the whole game and booed every time I went near the ball. Andrew obviously gave me a hiding on the night.”
