January 19 1991: Adelaide’s squad hopped on a bus to be taken to a mystery location for a weekend training camp straight after playing their second internal trial at Football Park.

Coach Graham Cornes was pleased with the hit-out, watched by 2000 fans and described as “spectacular” by The Advertiser. It was another competitive game and Michael Whitford and Grantley Fielke were among a group of players hurt during the trial.

“Apart from the injuries, it was very good,” said Cornes. “The skill level was much better - the quick movement of the ball certainly was. It was a very productive trial.”

Tony McGuinness, back in South Australia after a successful stint with Footscray, played his first game of the pre-season. The teams named for the internal were:

F: Bennett, Mandemaker, Hocking. HF: Liptak, D. Smith, Field. C: Payze, A. Jarman, Tregenza. HB: Tasker, Bartlett, Schwerdt. B: Lee, Whitford, Grummett. R: Heath, Fielke, McGuinness. I/C: Patterson, Rowe.

F: Lindner, McIntyre. Bickley. HF: Murphy, Klug, Lindsay. C: Kelly, Marshall, Tanner. HB: Thompson, Clisby, Maynard. B: Fiacchi, Warhurst, Rouvray. R: Negri, Smart, Hart. I/C: Haraida, Weidemann.

This year the Adelaide Football Club celebrates the 20th anniversary of its first AFL game for premiership points when it plays Hawthorn in the opening round - two decades after the Crows thumped Hawthorn by 86 points at Football Park.
