The AFL has confirmed Adelaide will host Sydney in the 2nd Qualifying Final at 2:45pm (local time) on Saturday.

The winner will progress directly to a home Preliminary Final, while the loser will take on the winner of the Elimination Final between Geelong and Fremantle in the Semi-Finals.

It has been scheduled as an afternoon game to allow the Swans - a top-four side - to return to their home state that evening.

The AAMI Stadium clash will be the second match played in the first-week finals fixture, with Hawthorn and Collingwood to kick off proceedings at the MCG on Friday night,

Geelong will play Fremantle in an Elimination Final at the MCG on Saturday night, and West Coast will host North Melbourne in the other knockout final at Patersons Stadium on Sunday.

AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou said the AFL had determined that the highest teams on the ladder in the top four should play the opening matches in the 2012 Toyota AFL Finals Series.

"As the leading sides over the premiership season, Hawthorn, the Adelaide Crows, the Sydney Swans and Collingwood were all scheduled to play in the Friday and Saturday afternoon slots so that the losers of the Qualifying Finals will have a longer break going into the second week of the finals, when playing knock-out semi-finals.

"An afternoon match at AAMI Stadium between the Crows and the Swans will also enable the Swans to return home that night - an advantage they deserve over the sides outside of the top four by virtue of their performance over the home and away season.

“It was the AFL’s view that we wished to maximise both attendances at the MCG, as well as providing big games for our television viewing audiences, by placing the Hawthorn v Collingwood match on Friday night and the Geelong Cats v Fremantle match on Saturday night,” Mr Demetriou said.

“We congratulate all the teams that have made the eight and look forward to an exciting finals series given the quality of the football that has been on display through the first 23 rounds,” he said.

“We thank all football supporters for their support of the game throughout 2012 and look forward to them enjoying the finals series.”

Mr Demetriou said the fixture for the coming weeks of the finals would see the Second Semi Final involving the Adelaide Crows/Sydney Swans loser v Geelong Cats/Fremantle winner played on Friday September 14 and the First Semi Final involving the Hawthorn/Collingwood loser v West Coast/North Melbourne winner as either a day or night game on Saturday September 15.
