Crow Patrick Dangerfield scored eight votes against West Coast to finish seventh in the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year Award.
Dangerfield was adjudged the best player on the ground at Patersons Stadium on Saturday night. The explosive onballer amassed 29 possessions (17 contested), eight marks, six clearances and 3.2 in Adelaide’s emphatic 86-point win. He finished the year on 73 votes overall despite missing two games through injury.
The coaches couldn’t split Andy Otten, Brodie Smith and Scott Thompson, who each received five votes from Brenton Sanderson and John Worsfold. Otten kicked three goals from 20 possessions as a forward, while Smith played arguably his best game as a Crow, collecting a career-high 29 touches. Thompson continued his strong finish to the season, racking up 30-plus possessions (33) for the second straight week, laying five tackles and slotting two goals.
Reliable backman Daniel Talia earned four votes for keeping West Coast spearhead Josh Kennedy goalless, and impressive midfielder Brad Crouch collected another two votes. Ruckman Dean Cox was the only Eagles player to attract a vote (one).
Collingwood star Scott Pendlebury polled nine votes in Round 23 to be crowned AFLCA Champion Player of the Year on 96 votes, one vote ahead of Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett and two ahead of Geelong captain Joel Selwood.
