Assistant coach Mark Bickley says the promotion of Charlie Cameron to the Crows’ senior list proves the Club’s state league program is working.
Cameron has turned heads with his performances in his first five games with the SANFL Crows this season. The 19-year-old is the Club’s leading SANFL goalkicker with five majors for the season, including a bag of four in tough conditions at Glenelg Oval in Round Four.
The exciting Crow is also renown for his feverish defensive pressure, averaging three tackles a game as a small forward at SANFL level in 2014.
Bickley said Cameron’s upgrade is a glowing endorsement of Adelaide’s new SANFL side.
“He’s played (five games) in the state league where he has played under the Adelaide Crows structure and system and knows the jargon and language that we use,” Bickley said on FIVEaa.
“The fact that he’s been playing within our structures gives us great confidence that he will be able to step up and do the job for us.”
“He’s got electrifying pace and great closing speed on the opposition, and he’s really clever around goals as well.“
“It’s a good news story for our state league team.”
Jarryd Lyons has also impressed at SANFL level in 2014 with a string of strong performances. The tough midfielder has averaged 25 disposals and 10 clearances in five state league games this season.
Bickley said the depth of Adelaide’s midfield had hurt Lyons in recent weeks, but there was no denying the 21-year-old’s sparkling SANFL form.
“Jarryd has been in great form,” Bickley said.
“But the style of player that Jarryd is, being an in-and-under clearance type player, it’s similar to Scott Thompson, Matt Crouch and Matt Wright.
“What we don’t want is to have a whole heap of blokes who are banging heads in and under the footy, because then we don’t have the balance right.”
Lyons was named Adelaide’s best player against West Adelaide at Richmond Oval last weekend, collecting another 26 possessions and eight clearances in a losing side.
“Jarryd could not do any more in that regard in terms of his clearance stuff - his numbers have been phenomenal.
“His spread from the stoppage and covering of the ground is improving week by week.
“He is right in the mix and clearly someone who we see in our long-term plans.”
