Boom recruit Eddie Betts has capped off a remarkable first season at Adelaide, receiving the Chelsea Phillis Coaches Award at the Crows Club Champion presentation on Friday night.
Betts, who joined Adelaide as a Free Agent last October, played all 22 games in Season 2014.
The lively small forward kicked 51 goals (ranked eighth in the AFL) to also claim the Club’s Leading Goalkicker Award. It’s the third time Betts has topped his team’s goalkicking in a single season, having achieved the feat at Carlton in 2010 and 2012.
Betts’ career-best goal tally included a Goal of the Year contender against North Melbourne in Round 13, which contributed to the north-eastern pocket in front of the old scoreboard at Adelaide Oval being renamed the ‘Eddie Betts’ pocket. Betts notched up his 300th career goal against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium in Round Six.
Betts, 27, was selfless, almost to a fault, according to coach Brenton Sanderson who encouraged the two-time All Australian to “just kick the goal” instead of always going out of his way to bring teammates into the game.
Betts ranked No.1 in the League for goal assists (29) and second in score assists (42). His most memorable assist was a handball to retiring champion Ben Rutten, who registered a goal with his last-ever kick against St Kilda at Adelaide Oval in Round 23. Betts was also third for scoreboard impact according to Champion Data with 515 points behind only Coleman Medallist Lance Franklin (546) and Geelong spearhead Tom Hawkins (516).
He was included in the All-Australian squad of 40 for Season 2014. It’s the third time Betts has earned selection in the squad, but he’s yet to crack the final 22.
Betts’ defensive pressure remained a feature of his game as he excited Crows fans with his run-down chases and tackles. He ranked third in the AFL for forward 50m tackles.
The fan favourite, who played 184 games with the Blues, reached the 200-game milestone against Hawthorn in Round 17.
He also made an immediate impact away from the football field.
Betts, partner Anna and young son Lewis, opened their hearts and their home to exciting rookie Charlie Cameron, helping to fast-track his development at AFL level.
