Rory Sloane put on a show in his 100th game against St Kilda at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
Sloane amassed 30 possessions and kicked an equal-career high three goals in his milestone match. The influential onballer also took nine works, won eight clearances and generated six inside 50ms in Adelaide’s 79-point win.
Brodie Smith was the leading possession-getter on the ground. Smith racked up an equal-personal best 34 touches and five marks. Released onto a wing, the line-breaking Crow worked hard between the arcs, generating six rebound 50ms and four inside 50ms. He also kicked a goal and assisted in another.
Defender Daniel Talia capped off an individually brilliant season by claiming the scalp of one of the best forwards in the game, Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt. Talia held Riewoldt scoreless for only the second time in two years. Riewoldt also recorded his equal-lowest possession count (10) this season. Talia finished with more disposals (15) and marks (eight) than his opponent and also assisted in a goal in an incredible performance.
In the back half, Matthew Jaensch and Brent Reilly also had polished displays. Jaensch, who had a game-high six running bounces, generated plenty of offensive run, with five rebound 50ms. He collected 26 touches at 96 per cent efficiency and took seven marks. Reilly also used the ball well across half-back, winning 22 disposals and taking seven marks.
At the opposite end of the ground, livewire Eddie Betts was sensational. Betts slotted five goals to take his season tally to 51 – his best-ever return in a single season. The two-time All Australian ensured his name would be in front of the selectors again, finishing eighth in the Coleman Medal race and ranking No.1 in the AFL for goal assists (29) and third in forward 50m tackles. He had another four goal assists on Sunday, including a memorable handball to retiring champion Ben Rutten in the final minutes.
Key forward Taylor Walker also presented strongly. Walked kicked 3.3 to finish with 34 goals from 15 games in his comeback from a knee reconstruction. He also took six marks against the Saints and assisted in a goal.
Ruckman Sam Jacobs also finished his consistent season in style. Jacobs won a season-high 49 hit-outs, gathered 14 touches and took four marks. He also sent the ball inside Adelaide’s attacking 50m three times and assisted in a goal.
Dashing wingman David Mackay made a welcome return to the team. Adding some much-needed run, Mackay gathered 20 possessions and five marks. He generated five inside 50ms including one goal and two other goal assists. He also laid five tackles.
Patrick Dangerfield won a game-high nine clearances from 26 possessions. Dangerfield also sent the ball inside forward 50m six times and kicked a goal.
