Crow Scott Thompson burned up a track of a different kind on Friday, jumping in the passenger seat for a hot lap around the Clipsal 500 track with V8 star and new Crows Ambassador Tim Slade.
As tough and courageous as they come on the footy field, Thompson was a tad nervous before strapping himself into Slade’s car, which routinely hits speeds in excess of 300km/h. But the two-time Crows Club Champion was grinning from ear to ear when the pair returned to the garage.
“That was bloody unreal; I loved it,” Thompson said after the lap.
“I always thought V8 drivers were half-mad and adrenaline junkies … and that’s proved they are. But they are also amazing athletes to do that (gear changing) lap after lap.
“And the G-force when you take off, you can feel your face pulled back.”
Thompson was at the Clipsal track to officially welcome South Aussies and Crows fans Slade and Percat, who are teammates on the Walkinshaw Racing Team, onboard as Adelaide Football Club Ambassadors.
A lifelong Crows fan, Percat said the V8 drivers often kicked a footy around in pit lane between training sessions.
“I tried to play footy growing up, but unfortunately I don't have the build for it!," Percat said with a laugh.
"I’ve got the jumper from the Crows back-to-back premierships back at home and it’s really cool to be invited to be a Club Ambassador. I’m watching the Club closely when I’m not in the V8 Supercars.”
Percat, 24, won the Bathurst 1000 at his first attempt, co-driving for Garth Tander in 2011. Percat, who was making his championship debut at the season opening Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, fell just five laps short of a dream start to the 2014 V8 Supercars championship. He was in third position when he tagged the wall through the high-speed turn eight. Slade finish in sixth place overall.
