Jaensch has played 30 games since being rookie-listed by Adelaide at the end of 2009.

After starting his AFL career as a small forward, the versatile Jaensch enjoyed a breakout season in defence in 2011 before a shoulder injury put a premature end to his year.

Despite missing the last seven rounds, the 22-year-old from Hahndorf was recognised with an award for ‘Emerging Talent’ at the Crows Club Champion presentation.

Jaensch joins exciting trio Patrick Dangerfield, Jared Petrenko and Brodie Smith in committing to the Club this year.

“I’m looking forward to staying here for another two years,” Jaensch told afc.com.au.

“I was never going to go anywhere else. I think we’re building something pretty good and it’s good to be a part of it at the moment.”

Football operations general manager Phil Harper said the Club was pleased to secure the future of another promising young player.

“Since his debut, Matthew has shown steady improvement,” Harper said.

“His pace and elite kicking skills make him an important member of our team, now and into the future. We are very happy Matthew has re-committed to the team as we enter an exciting period for the Club.”

Jaensch featured in all of Adelaide’s NAB Cup matches, but was squeezed out of the team for round one of the season proper.

The neat-kicking backman went back to SANFL club Sturt, and eventually forced his way back into the 22 against Greater Western Sydney in round four.

“It was disappointing not to be in the team from the start,” he said.

“I’ve actually never been picked in the team I wanted to be in for the start of a season. I’ve never played the first round of an AFL season, or in Sturt’s league team.

Jaensch has retained his place in the team, playing the last six straight games.

He collected a career-best 28 disposals in Adelaide’s loss to Collingwood on Saturday night.

“The loss was disappointing, but I was pretty happy with how I went on the weekend. I went through a few things with the coaches that I need to improve on, but it was a good platform for me to attack the second half of the year,” he said.

“Hopefully, as a team we can get the four points this weekend and go into the second half of the season with a lot of momentum.”
