'19' flag flies high
Simon Goodwin has overcome his fear of heights to unveil "the 19th man" flag.
The giant blue flag which bears the number 19 is in honour of the Crows loyal and passionate membership and fan base which Neil Craig and the players believe is their 19th man.
Craig has often said that a packed AAMI stadium and a vocal crowd is their "19th man" in tight matches, likening it to having an extra player on the field.
Goodwin warily climbed up into scissor lift which was then raised some 15 metres off the ground to attach the flag to the enormous crane that is working on the $19 million Adelaide Football Club facility which is due to be completed by October this year.
The flag, which can be seen up to a kilometre away, is just one of a number of ways the Club intends on recognising the importance of their members and supporters which is the largest of all AFL Clubs.
The Club's number 19 jumper has been retired and on the No 19 locker there is recognition of the club's members and supporters.
The “19th Man” (a registered trademark owned by the AFC) is based on similar concepts used by sporting clubs in the United States – perhaps most famously the “12th man” used by the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks - and in the United Kingdom.
Some of the other initiatives are:
* the new facility will feature Bar 19 as the main members’ bar.
* The Members’ Most Valuable Player award, presented at the Club Champion night, will be renamed as the ‘19th Man’ award.
* The number 19 will be subtly used in all membership giveaways and paraphernalia (eg caps, bags, pens, scarves etc).
A survey will be sent to members over the summer asking for suggestions on how the “19th Man” can be used to provide the club with an advantage.
