Adelaide defender Rory Laird does not believe the AFL should scrap the results of Round One from the 2020 season.

West Coast and Collingwood premiership coach Mick Malthouse suggested the controversial idea of disregarding Round One upon the AFL’s return.

Malthouse told ABC radio the opening fixtures were comparable to a “practice match” and that it was bad luck for the teams who had recorded a win.

Despite the Crows losing against Sydney in Round One, Laird said he did not support the idea.

“If you’re going to play a season, that’s part of the season,” Laird told ABC Grandstand in Adelaide.

“No matter how long it is between games, that (Round One) should count.

“I know teams that had a win in Round One would definitely want that to count.

“It’s hard to win in the AFL and they’ve gone out there and done that… the deserve the points.”

Regarding the idea of AFL hubs to host games, Laird said he was open to any idea that would lead to the return of games.

“I just want to get back and start playing,” he said.

“We went through a big pre-season to get ready… to go back to (just) training, it’s not that enjoyable.

“I understand some guys are hesitant with their families at home and if they’re away for a long period of time…”
