I am sure you will agree that the past few days have been difficult and emotionally draining as all of us deal with the impact of the coronavirus on our everyday life. It is now slightly comforting to know there will be an element of normality with footy games being played in coming days.
Our Club, as well as the entire industry, is extremely disappointed that you, our Crows family is unable to be at the ground to share in the excitement of Rory Sloane’s 200th AFL game, or Matthew Nicks’ first outing as Senior Coach. It’s going to be an incredibly weird experience seeing the empty stands!
It was understandable to see the League call off the AFLW minor round and progress straight to finals in a bid to enhance the chances of a premiership winner being determined in these uncertain times. It unfortunately spells the end of the season for our women’s team and I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Senior Coach Matthew Clarke and his players. It’s never easy being the defending champions and while we did not get the desired results on-field, our players once again showed they are outstanding and inspiring ambassadors for our Club and the women’s game.
As I have said quite a few times, the health and safety of our players, coaches, staff, Members, fans and community is always paramount, and this is reflected in all of our decision making. Your Club and the game in general is facing an unprecedented challenge and it requires an extraordinary response from everyone. I am pleased to say the 18 clubs are united in the fight.
The serious nature of the challenge confronting all Australians in limiting the spread of the coronavirus has well and truly hit home, and the impact is far reaching for many industries. Like all clubs, we are continuing to work through a complex series of issues affecting our operations, and we appreciate the patience and understanding being shown by you, our loyal Members.
As an industry, we are working very hard to challenge traditional thinking about how we interact and engage with you. It is a special relationship and we are determined to not only preserve that during these unique times but where possible ensure it is enhanced. Stay tuned for more details.
We are being guided by the AFL, government and a host of medical experts, and we are trying to update you as often as possible. A key part of keeping you informed will be our digital platform which continues to deliver creative and entertaining content, and we will be stepping this up another level while the Federal Government’s mass gathering policy is in place. You will also find plenty of insights and inner sanctum content on the Club-produced ‘Crows Show’ which is airing on Channel 7 Adelaide. If you have any ideas as to the type of content you would like to see and hear then I encourage you to reach out via the Club’s social media accounts and put forward your suggestions.
The Crows family is one of the most passionate and loyal supporter bases in Australian sport and I know that we will band together and emerge from this situation stronger than ever. Football has been around for a very long time and has proven itself to be resilient so there is no doubt the game will find a way forward.
Finally, we are amidst difficult times so please stay safe and look after each other. We Fly As One.
