Crows development squad player James Mathews is having surgery to repair a ruptured anterior crucial ligament suffered in Saturday's Under 23 trial game against Port Adelaide.
Scans confirmed the injury to the 23-year-old’s right knee and the decision was made to undergo surgery on Sunday, meaning he will be sidelined for the entire home and away season.
Mathews has been training with Adelaide since pre-season training commenced in November and played five games for the SANFL Crows last year, including all three finals.
Crows Head of Football Adam Kelly said it was bitterly disappointing to see Mathews suffer an injury after landing awkwardly from a marking contest.
“James has been a true professional over the pre-season and has really lived the values of our Club through his team-first approach,” Kelly said.
“We will do all we can to support and assist him with his rehabilitation in the months ahead, and all of our players, coaches and staff share in his disappointment.
“However, he is a young man of great character and his positive and upbeat attitude will ensure he overcomes this setback and returns to the field as soon as possible.”
