Rory Laird has been rewarded for his career-best form with a new three-year deal.
Laird, 21, is the third Crow to commit in the past eight days. The small defender joins midfielders Rory Sloane and Richard Douglas in signing with the Club until 2018.
Laird was recruited with pick No.5 in the Rookie Draft of December, 2011. The former West Adelaide junior was elevated to the senior list ahead of his AFL debut in Round Four, 2013. He’s played a total of 45 games, including every match this season.
“Signing on was an easy decision because I am really excited by the journey we have embarked upon,” Laird said.
“There is no doubt we have the talent and we must now do the hard work to make sure we get where we want to go.
“We are fortunate to be at a Club where we have every opportunity to get the best out of ourselves and there is a lot to like about the team-first environment.”
After an injury-interrupted 2014, Laird has been one of Adelaide’s most improved and consistent players this season.
The courageous Crow leads the Club in rebound 50ms and handball receives, and is second in total disposals and intercept marks.
As well as providing run and poise across half-back, Laird has been injected into the midfield at times, where he’s played a negating role while still winning plenty of the ball. His performances this season have been recognised by the coaches, who have awarded Laird votes in the AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year five times – the equal-most of any Crow.
Senior Coach Phil Walsh said Laird brings a competitive edge to the backline.
“Rory has been one of our most consistent performers this season with his fierce attack on the footy and opposition,” Walsh said.
“He is another one of those players who epitomises the team-first attitude and I think most would agree that he has taken his game to another level.
“He will continue to play an important role in our emerging backline in the years ahead.”
