Ian Callinan says he’s eager to expand his development role this year as he continues to hone his coaching craft.
Callinan, 32, joined Adelaide’s development department last season alongside his role as the Crows’ inaugural SANFL captain.
The four-time SANFL premiership veteran has continued to work closely with Adelaide’s State League coaching staff throughout the summer as preparations ramp up for the Club’s second SANFL campaign.
He held an integral role in helping Heath Younie’s team select the Club’s 28-man State League development squad, with many set for their first outing as Crows in Saturday’s SANFL trial against Port Adelaide.
Although retirement is not on his mind just yet, Callinan said coaching remained a passion he was eager to pursue.
“I’m just trying to dip my toe in the water while I’m still playing and so far it’s going well,” Callinan told afc.com.au.
“It’s been a bit of a challenge but it’s something that I’m keen to do and I think I’m making good progress in that area.”
Callinan, who is nearly three months into the AFLPA’s ‘Next Coach’ accreditation program, said he felt fortunate to be able to learn off some of the game’s most respected names.
“We’ve got a great coaching group here at the Club, so there’s plenty of opportunities for me to learn and develop,” he said.
“Phil Walsh in particular has been outstanding in such a short period of time.
“He’s probably one of the smartest coaches I’ve ever been involved with, and I’ve been in footy a long time.”
Callinan, who is on the eve of his 16th season of senior football as a player, said Walsh’s ability to connect with his charges was among the best he’s encountered.
“’Walshy’ just has a way to instill confidence into the group,” he said.
“He backs his players and is very clear with his communication and how he wants the team to play.
“He’s also got great attention to detail when it comes to the small things involved in training, game structure and the day-to-day running of the football club.
“He’s one of the best I’ve seen and it’s great to be involved with him. I’ve learnt a hell of a lot over the past six months.”
