The Adelaide Crows have received significant financial support for their elite women’s team from the South Australian Government.

Premier Jay Weatherill has announced an initial commitment of $275,000 to assist the Club during its first year in the newly formed AFL national women’s league.

Adelaide is among eight clubs to have a women’s line-up with Carlton, Collingwood, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Fremantle, Brisbane and Greater Western Sydney also competing in 2017.

Crows Chief Executive Andrew Fagan thanked the Government for its support, adding the financial contribution was another important moment in the push to field a team that will proudly represent the Club and South Australia.

"To the Government's credit, it has been very supportive throughout this process and the Premier, and Minister for Recreation and Sport were quick to endorse our original submission to the AFL," Fagan said.

“It is a privilege to be the State’s sole representative in the national women’s league and we are well aware of the responsibility it brings.

“Our aim is to be competitive on-field but also to foster junior development and strengthen talent pathways so young women can fulfil their potential as players, coaches and administrators.

“We are part of an exciting era in Australian sport and there continues to be strong community and corporate support as we build towards making the Crows the club of choice for women and girls.”

Premier Weatherill said the Government was looking forward to seeing the Crows team compete in next year’s inaugural competition.

“We're committed to helping women's sport thrive in South Australia by providing pathways to elite sport, encouraging participation and ensuring they have the best facilities possible,” he said.

“Women's sport must be promoted, supported and treated equally.”

The Crows have partnered with AFLNT and intend to play home games in Adelaide, as well as Darwin and possibly Alice Springs.
