Adelaide’s SANFL team will play its first ‘home’ game in the city at Thebarton Oval on Saturday.
The clash against ladder leader Sturt could be the prototype for future ‘home’ games against other SANFL clubs and Crows GM of Football Administration Phil Harper said he hoped Crows fans would get behind the initiative.
“This a great chance for Crows supporters to come and watch the team and support the SANFL competition,” he said.
“Sturt’s proposal to move the game from Unley Oval was a great idea and Thebarton Oval is a perfect venue.
“Our AFL team is playing away in Melbourne on Sunday for the second week in a row so we’d love as many Crows fans as possible to make the most of the opportunity and enjoy the game.
“It’s free entry for Crows AFL ticketed members and Sturt members, and kids are free too.”
Sturt will retain the gate and catering revenue.
There will be activities for children, random prizes and a series of junior curtainraiser games played between the Unley Jets and Glenunga, starting from 10.15am.
Players from both Adelaide and Sturt will sign autographs at the end of the league game.
Thebarton Oval was first used for league football in 1922, when Sturt was hosted by West Torrens in the opening round of the season.
The ground was the home of the West Torrens Football Club until 1990, when it moved its games to Football Park.
Thebarton Oval last hosted a SANFL game in the opening round of the 2012 season, between Woodville-West Torrens and Port Adelaide.
Saturday’s league game starts at 2.10pm.
