Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe will have surgery in Melbourne on a fractured leg and has no time-frame for a return to playing.
Fyfe, 24, sat out the second half of Fremantle’s loss to Carlton at Domain Stadium on Sunday. The Dockers star had an ice pack strapped to his lower left leg and left the ground on crutches.
He underwent scans to confirm the damage and will undergo surgery from leading sports surgeon Julian Feller, who operated on Fyfe at the end of last season.
General manager of football operations Chris Bond said it was too early to put a time-frame on Fyfe's return.
"Nat is travelling to Melbourne for the surgery, after which we will be taking a cautious approach to his recovery and rehabilitation phase," Bond said.
“At this stage we have not set a time frame for his return. It is very disappointing for Nat, the club and our members and supporters but our focus is always on a player's long-term health and wellbeing."
Bond confirmed that defender Michael Johnson would also undergo surgery as a result of an injury suffered in Sunday’s game.
“Michael suffered a hamstring tendon injury in his right leg and a tear to the medial ligament in his right knee,” he said.
“We will be better placed to advise on Michael’s availability after he has undergone surgery and completed his recovery phase.”
In better news for Fremantle, captain David Mundy is expected to return from a calf injury for the club’s trip to Adelaide to play the Crows on Saturday afternoon.
Coach Ross Lyon indicated Mundy, who has missed three weeks, was likely to come straight back into the team and also said that youngsters Connor Blakely and Ethan Hughes were a chance to get an opportunity along with experienced duo Matt de Boer and Tendai Mzungu after good performances for Peel Thunder.
