Kellie Gibson has kicked her way into the history books, scoring the first Crows goal in the women’s team’s historic Round One win over Greater Western Sydney.

And what a kick it was. Marquee player Gibson got a quick handball from co-captain Erin Phillips halfway through the first quarter at Thebarton Oval, and booted the goal from right on the 50m arc.

“I didn’t think Erin was going to give it off, but she did!” Gibson laughed after the game.

The first-quarter moment happened so quickly, Gibson almost needed a replay to remind her.

“That’s pretty sick!” the 20-year-old forward laughed when she saw the footage for the first time after the game.

“I remember just watching it and I was like ‘it’s going to go through!’ Then all I can remember was the crowd. The crowd was amazing,” Gibson said.

Nearly 10,000 fans packed Thebarton Oval this afternoon despite the rain, and the weather didn’t put off the players either.

“We did our warm up and it was already raining so we adapted really well. We just went with it. Wet weather makes it a bit easier to put that pressure on,” Gibson said.

That Crows pressure was unrelenting, keeping GWS goalless until the last quarter and rarely letting them inside the forward 50.

“We’re all about hard football and pressure football. We want to be uncomfortable to play against and I think we really did that today,” Gibson said.

AFLW Match report: Crows v Giants

It was an entertaining, skilful display from the side in their first AFLW match.

“I really stuck to my role, leading up the ground and providing those options. That’s how the goal came about,” she said.

Gibson’s family had flown in from Perth for the game, complete with ‘Team Gibson’ t-shirts that explained their reaction when the goal bounced through.

“Did you not hear us? It was massive! It was perfect for her to start her season like that,” Gibson’s mum Sandra said.

“How I kept the emotion down I don’t know! I literally have a bag of tissues because I thought I was just going to be balling.”

The Gibsons have already gathered a suburb-sized cheer squad in preparation for the Crows’ trip to WA to take on Fremantle in Round 4.

“We literally have the whole of Ellenbrook, where we live, coming,” Sandra said.

Her daughter is confident the Crows will keep putting on entertaining displays for their audience.

“We really want to get the crowd involved and show them that women can play football,” Gibson said.

Despite months of build up to a momentous season, Gibson was feeling calm ahead of her debut.

“Leading into the game this week, I’m one of those people who would put it to the side and concentrate on work and my personal life. I wasn’t too fazed by it,” Gibson said.

“Then when we watched Carlton v Collingwood last night, it was mind blowing, really” she said.

If AFLW is good to watch, it’s even better to be out there making history, one goal at a time.

“When we got our chance to run out today, it was pretty epic.”
