Improving the processes around the SANFL Development Squad has been SANFL coach Heath Younie’s main priority since returning to the role ahead of the 2019 season.
Younie was the inaugural SANFL Crows coach and was in the top role for three seasons before stepping back to oversee in his role as Development Manager.
He is taking back the reins in 2019 and over the last few months has put in countless hours scouring the state for the best local talent to join the squad.
Younie got “great joy” out of targeting and recruiting the local players and believes it will hold the team in good stead for the upcoming season.
“We talked to a number of different players, coaches, people that see a lot of footy in the country,” Younie said.
“The fact we spent more time chasing, we feel we’ve got a better handle on the talent that is out there.
“Then when it comes to fruition to see what we see now, I’ve been really pleased with the work we’ve done thus far.”
The development squad has been picked from a list profile perspective and players that will fill gaps in the AFL list have been recruited to provide more support.
While the number of development squad members that play during the season will be dictated by how healthy the AFL list is, Younie is confident that when the players are required, they will step up.
“We’ve brought a number of guys into our match simulation and they’re acquitting themselves really strongly, so that gives us great faith that they are going to be good enough,” Younie said.
“We know if we do need to bring guys in, they’re going to be good enough to play at the level.
“I’m really confident we can put a strong side out.”
FIXTURE: 2019 SANFL Crows fixture
After a tough season last year where the SANFL side only won one game, Younie believes that ensuring the players are enjoying their time on the field is a must in 2019.
Younie hasn’t set any goals for the group in terms of winning games, but has three aspects he wishes all players to bring.
“What I learned, not just the last two years but even the first time I coached, is to maintain the enjoyment,” Younie said.
“That comes from how we coach the players, the environment we set up, and we have to remind ourselves that we have been in their shoes before and they are going to make mistakes, but our job is to provide solutions and help them develop.
“From a players perspective, I want them to focus on bringing a positive attitude, putting the team first, bringing a great work rate, and bringing their weapon, bring what they are good at and never lose sight of that.”
Over 50 players have trained with the development squad over the summer, with the squad expected to be finalised in coming weeks.
The SANFL Crows will have their second trial game on Friday, March 22 against Port at Alberton.
