Each week Tex, Sloaney and Eddie play an important role on the field, but their efforts in another role, before they even leave the change rooms, is appreciated by many young fans.
With the team’s junior mascots often feeling overwhelmed by one of the biggest days of their life so far, the Crows leaders go out of their way to make them feel welcome and at ease.
At the MCG last Saturday for Adelaide’s clash with Carlton, Walker, Sloane and Betts once again demonstrated their softer side as young Shepparton-based Crows fans Laila and Harry prepared to run onto the oval.
Five year-old Harry is in remission from leukaemia and half way through a two-and-a-half year treatment plan. Supported by his older sister Laila, the two were “over the moon” but understandably a little nervous about the experience.
As they warmed up for the game, Walker, Sloane and Betts, with some help from defender Rory Laird, shared jokes with the two, signed autographs and provided encouragement.
“It was quite emotional for all involved but it created a great family memory that will never be forgotten,” said Laila and Harry’s father, Tim.
“It was a little daunting for Harry who didn’t want to leave mum before they ran up the race but Eddie and his big sister kept him calm and helped him through it.
“Laila on the other hand was in her element and even did a few jumps in their air during the warm up. Stars were definitely in her eyes when she was looking up at Tex!
“The way he (Walker) looked after the kids while they were on the ground was greatly appreciated by two nervous parents.
“To top things off, the day was made extra special as their aunties, uncles and cousins from Melbourne and Naracoorte came to watch and share the experience with them.”
The once-in-a-lifetime mascot opportunity is provided through Club partner Bendigo Bank or the Crows Children’s Foundation, which helps sick or disadvantaged kids through funding or experiences.
