Injured Crows defender Brodie Smith has vowed to remain upbeat and help his teammates to achieve success this September.
In a cruel blow, Smith injured his knee as he attempted to change direction minutes after kicking Adelaide’s opening goal in the Club’s Qualifying Final win over Greater Western Sydney on Thursday night.
Scans on Friday confirmed the All Australian, who has played every game this season, had ruptured the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee.
He will consult a surgeon to determine the best course of action, but could face up to 12 months on the sidelines.
“The scans showed the worst, unfortunately, so I’ve got the ACL tear with a bit of bone bruising and some other stuff as well, so did a good job of it,” Smith said on Friday.
“The docs were pretty confident I’d done it (an ACL) straight away, so I guess I prepared myself for the worst but held onto a little bit of hope that it’d be okay.
“It is what it is and I just look forward now to the next three weeks and trying to help my teammates in whatever way I can to get the ultimate success.”
Keen to stay involved in Adelaide’s finals campaign, Smith has already spoken to coach Don Pyke and defensive coach James Podsiadly about an off-field role in the next month.
Regarded as a bit of a larrikin, the 25-year-old is an immensely popular character at West Lakes.
Smith said he would find “every little way” to help the Crows on their quest for a premiership.
“I’ll try and stay positive and crack a few gags, get the energy up,” he said.
“I’ve really tried to work on my leadership of that back six this year, so I’ve done a lot of work in terms of meetings and things like that.
“I’ll work with ‘Podsy’ and almost try and be an assistant coach to him for the next three weeks.
“(I’ll also) just try and give tips where I can and work with ‘Lairdy’ (Rory Laird) and ‘Browny’ (Luke Brown) and Jake Kelly, who play similar roles.”
