Adelaide has stuck to its drafting philosophy of selecting the best available talent at this year’s AFL Draft, but were also able to address a number of pressing needs in the process.

The Crows added Will Hamill and Lachlan Sholl on the second day of proceedings with picks 30 and 64 respectively, with the pair renowned for their elite running ability.

Both finished in the top 10 in the Yo-Yo test at October’s Draft Combine, won by Adelaide’s No. 16 selection Ned McHenry, with Hamill also placing in the top three in the 20m sprint.

“Those two boys, coupled with the two (selected) last night, we needed to get some running power in and we think we’ve got four really good runners,” recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie told reporters at Marvel Stadium.

“Will, with his elite, high-level speed and Lachie Sholl’s just a real hard-grinding runner.

“The speed and the run was really important for us.

“Whilst taking best available, we’ve been able to address a few of those needs and pressing things we wanted to add to the group.”

Adelaide started the day with picks No. 24 and 69, but two live pick swaps saw the Crows trade down to No. 28 in a deal with Greater Western Sydney and later move up to No. 64 after an exchange with Carlton.

The Crows received pick No. 28 and Carlton’s future second-round selection, which the Giants acquired in their trade for Will Setterfield, in exchange for 24 and Carlton’s future fifth-round selection from the recent Mitch McGovern deal.

DRAFTEES: New Crows bring character

After having a bid duly matched for Collingwood father-son prospect Will Kelly, brother of Crows defender Jake, the Crows had no hesitation in calling Hamill’s name at No. 30.

“The ability to slide back a few spots and still get Hamill, who we were considering picking at 21, and get an extra pick in that was a really good result,” Ogilvie said.

“Hamill’s got a lot of speed and immense courage. We were super impressed with him last year as a 17-year-old and while his possession numbers were a little bit low, he improved as the season went on.

“A little bit of a shoulder injury which forced him to miss the nationals, but he finished off well and had an excellent finals series and played really tough and he’s only a lightly framed boy.”

The swap with Carlton allowed the Crows to jump up the order from No. 67 to No. 64, giving up next year’s fifth-round selection to get the deal over the line.

Ogilvie admitted he was relieved to see Sholl still on the draft board, whose dad Brett played 35 games for Carlton between 1992-1994.

“Today was a little bit hairy, we had to ride young Sholl through for a fair while,” Ogilvie said.

“Lachie Sholl’s just a real hard-grinding hard runner. He’s been really smart, played a lot on the wing early.

“Gone pretty well again last year, he’s just been a ball magnet and his two weapons are really decision making and skill.

“We were pretty pleased with the end result.”
