More than five years after its redevelopment, Adelaide Oval continues to draw praise from fans.
In 2019, the South Australian stadium has drawn an average crowd of 40,605 - equating to around 76 per cent of its capacity.
In comparison, the MCG and Marvel Stadium in Melbourne have managed average crowds of just 54 per cent and 62 per cent, respectively.
The Crows Show, brought to you by Optus, sat down with Walter Brooke (the firm behind Adelaide Oval’s redevelopment) director Ian Hore to discuss what goes into making a world-class stadium.
“Ultimately it’s all about the spectator experience,” Hore said.
“The live play is fantastic, but if you don’t make the spectator experience good, fans will stay home and watch it on the telly.”
AFL TEAM: Three changes ahead of Carlton
Perth’s new Optus Stadium - which opened at the beginning of 2018 - is attracting similar attention.
At the Prix Versailles Sports award in Paris earlier this month, Optus Stadium was named the “most beautiful sports facility” in the world.
Looking ahead to the future of stadiums, Hore said technology and food would both play a major part in how we enjoy live sport.
“There’s more effort being put into sound and light… there’s information technology coming,” he said.
“You’ll be able to use your phone more (at matches).
“(And) rather than just kiosk outlets, provide more food and beverage options.
“You could as a group or a family have casual meals before or during the game.”
