Crows coach Don Pyke has raised the idea of an additional bye round in the AFL schedule.
Speaking on Triple M’s The Rush Hour, Pyke said the increased workloads of players in the modern game could warrant a second break.
“We train them right to the minute to make sure they’re ready to go,” Pyke said.
“There’s a real skill and art to maintaining that for 23 weeks.
“I just wonder now in terms of the load and demands of the game… we’re mindful of our players.”
During the bye, Pyke travelled to Byron Bay but didn’t quite manage to spot Marvel actor Chris Hemsworth in the celebrity’s hometown.
“I did go to Byron Bay, (but) I didn’t see Chris anywhere,” Pyke said.
“His mansion is up in the hills somewhere, but I didn't make my way to the gates.”
HARD WORK: Bryce Gibbs ready to challenge for AFL spot
Although Pyke missed the Australian megastar, he still managed to see a handful of Crows players embarking on the same holiday.
“We got on the plane Sunday morning and there were seven or eight guys on board,” Pyke said.
“Word had got out I was going, when I said Byron Bay, a few of them asked ‘what, New South Wales?’.
Despite jokes of a WhatsApp group and a scheduled meet-up for a beer, Pyke said he gave the players “a bit of space”.
“It was nice to spend some time with the wife,” he said.
RECRUIT UPDATE: How the Crows young players have performed this season
Regarding his ruck options, Pyke said Sam Jacobs was performing well in the SANFL but understood the competition for the AFL spot.
“Sauce is going really well,” Pyke said.
“His last two weeks have been really good, but he understands he’s competing for one spot and the guy in there is playing well.
“He’s loving his footy, he’s playing well at SANFL level and we know what he’s capable of.
“It’s nice to have a position with two ruckmen in really good form and it’s not hurting Rob to have Sauce just there breathing on his shoulder.”
