The Crows have secured exciting forward Charlie Cameron for another two years.
Cameron, 19, has signed a new two-year deal that will see him promoted to Adelaide’s senior list for next season and beyond. Recruited by the Crows with their first pick in last year’s Rookie Draft, Cameron made his AFL debut against Collingwood in Round Nine after impressing in the SANFL.
The lightly-framed goalkicker was lively on debut, kicking his first goal and using his speed to chase, tackle and harass the opposition. He played four games in succession before being sidelined by a groin injury. Cameron said he was pleased to commit to Adelaide.
“It’s exciting. I’m happy the Club has showed faith in me and signed me for another two years,” he said.
Head of Football David Noble said Cameron had added a real x-factor to the forward line.
“Charlie has far exceeded our expectations in his first year at the Club,” Noble said.
“His willingness to learn, work hard and adapt to AFL life has been a pleasure to watch. We can’t wait to see what he can deliver once his body becomes battle hardened for the elite level.”
Cameron’s rise to AFL level has been rapid.
The Queensland-born teenager, who hails from a rugby background, only took up football seriously when his family moved to West Australia at the end of 2011.
He went out to WAFL club Swan Districts expecting to start in the colts, but made his senior debut in round one and was also chosen to represent WA at the Under-18 National Championships.
Cameron, who has played fewer than 50 games of football all told, said he’d enjoyed a big 12 months.
“I didn’t think I’d be where I am now,” Cameron said.
“I thought I’d still be on the rookie list and playing in the SANFL for the whole year. I’ve been lucky enough to play a few AFL games.
“Hopefully I can keep going and play a few more, but I just need to keep improving.”
Cameron hopes to make his return from injury next weekend after the Club’s AFL/SANFL bye.
“I’ve just had some groin soreness. It was nagging me the last couple of games I played,” he said.
“I’ve been running for a couple of weeks now, so I just need to keep doing my rehab and make sure it’s better for the latter part of the season.”
