When Harley Hall watches the Kuwarna AFLW side run out in a guernsey he co-designed on Friday night, he will be filled with a great sense of pride.
Hall worked alongside his cousin, Kuwarna AFL forward Izak Rankine, to design the Club’s 2024 Indigenous guernsey, with the special strip making its debut during Sir Doug Nicholls Rounds in May.
Now, the guernsey design will be brought back by the Club’s AFLW team, as it celebrates Indigenous Round with a blockbuster clash against ladder-leader North Melbourne.
Speaking to AFC Media, Hall said having the Club’s AFLW embrace the design was special.
“The way the AFLW team has embraced me, it’s been so lovely, they welcomed me into the Club and presented me with a signed guernsey, moments like that are what I’ll cherish forever,” Hall said.
“Seeing them represent my design and my family this Friday night will be a special moment, and I know they will go out there and wear the guernsey with pride.
“I can’t feel much prouder than what I am right now to be honest, opportunities like this are what give me strength and fill my cup.”
The overarching theme of the design is connection, and includes the names of all of the Club’s past and present Indigenous players, celebrating their contributions, the game, as well as the wider community.
“When I saw the (men’s) team wearing my artwork on their guernsey on the field for the first time, and the big flag behind the goals featuring the design, it was quite an emotional moment for me,” Hall said.
“I tear up a bit thinking about it now, but to see my work represented on such a big stage, I think I cried multiple times that day if I’m being honest.
“The overwhelming feeling was just pride, I was proud of myself, proud of my family and how my experiences through life had helped mold me into the person I am today.”
Hall will be on deck to see his design again this Friday night, and with the help of co-Major Partner BHP, will create an engaging art activation, inviting fans to contribute to the canvas themselves.
“I’ve got a good vision of what I’ll be doing on Friday night, and I can’t wait to share that with everyone who comes down to the game,” Hall said.
“To get people from all over to come down and put their handprint on the design will be great, it’s my way of getting people involved and that is something I love about the work I do.
“I’m all about togetherness, and I think this will be a wonderful way to show that.”
As for the match itself, Hall finds himself in a tough predicament, being a lifelong North Melbourne fan.
But he said he had forged a special connection to Kuwarna while working with the Club across the past 12 months.
“To be honest growing up I was a diehard Kangaroos fan, which is funny that we are playing against North this weekend,” Hall said.
“But the Crows have definitely won me over, and it's not only because I designed the guernsey, it’s the opportunities they have given me to get involved in what the Club does for Indigenous communities.
“The Adelaide Football Club feels like my family now, I love being involved wherever I can and on Friday night I’ll be supporting both teams.”
Kuwarna hosts North Melbourne at Norwood Oval on Friday at 7.15pm.
