Adelaide defender Luke Nankervis says “consistency at AFL level” has been the biggest driver behind his growth in 2024.
Since being recalled to the AFL side in Round Four, Nankervis has featured in 10 straight matches, averaging 17.3 disposals and 6.2 marks per game.
His strong form culminated in a career-high 28 disposals against Richmond last Thursday night, and it also earned him a Rising Star nomination.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Nankervis said he had worked hard to earn a spot in the side and maintain his form..
“The biggest thing for me has just been getting that consistency at AFL level,” Nankervis said.
“It is quite a step-up from the SANFL, so just being able to get another 10 games under my belt so far this year, it has taken my game to the next level.
“The biggest thing for me has been locking in on my defensive role, getting my player done and from there the confidence to go and get the footy and create has grown.”
A trademark of Nankervis’ game this season has been his willingness to take the game on.
He said his confidence with ball in hand has come from the backing of both coaches and his teammates.
“I’m not sure if I’d call it a license yet, I probably need to play a few more games, but the coaches are definitely happy for me to take the game on and break some lines when I’ve got the footy in hand,” Nankervis said.
“That vote of confidence (from everyone in the Club) has been big for me and really helped me settle at the level.
“Being able to learn off guys like Brodie Smith and Mitch Hinge has also been huge, they play a similar role to me, and it’s been great being able to take from their game’s and add it to mine.”
The Crows will be looking to bounce back from a tough fortnight when they host Sydney at Adelaide Oval this Saturday night.
Nankervis said the main focus leading into the game was to bring “pressure and intensity”.
“We reviewed last week’s game pretty thoroughly to really nail down on what the problems have been, but a lot of it comes back to contest,” Nankervis said.
“(This weekend) it will be all about bringing that pressure and intensity, against Sydney especially as they are a fast-moving team.
“I think we will be able to bring it to them and put in a better performance.”
Adelaide faces Sydney at Adelaide Oval this Saturday night, with the first bounce at 7pm (ACST).
