Crows proud of 'Roo'
The Adelaide Football Club congratulates Mark Ricciuto on his induction to the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
Crows CEO Steven Trigg said the Club had always been extremely proud of Ricciuto’s achievements: “This recognition is very much well-deserved. He was a magnificent player for this Club over a long period of time and it is certainly fitting that he has been added to this exclusive group.
“We are only a young Club but we have been fortunate to have many great players and mark is right up amongst the best, indeed the best of all time in the AFL.”
Ricciuto, who made his AFL debut in 1993, retired at the end of the 2007 after playing 312 games, then a club record.
He did not play in the 1997 premiership because of injury but he was there in 1998, when he also won the first of three club champion awards.
He is the only Crow to have won the Brownlow Medal (in 2003) and he captained the Crows from 2001 until his retirement.
Ricciuto, recruited by the Crows in 1992 as a 16-year-old from the Riverland town of Waikerie, was first named in the All-Australian side in 1994. He was selected a further seven times, the last in 2005 when he was also named captain.
He was the quickest player to reach the 300-game milestone in VFL/AFL history (13 years and 94 days).
Adelaide coach Neil Craig said: "One of Mark's strengths was his ability to lead the way and lead by example.
"He was a leader in a traditional mould. His style was 'get out the way, I'll do it. Follow me guys'.
"Anyone, who has played the game, would enjoy playing with Mark Ricciuto because of the way he plays. You wanted to be out there with him."
Ricciuto is the third Crows player in the Hall of Fame, following 1997-98 premiership players Darren Jarman and Mark Bickley. Wayne Carey, who finished his career with Adelaide, also is in the Hall of Fame based on his career at North Melbourne.
