Adelaide forward Riley Thilthorpe says the first two-and-a-half seasons of his AFL career have been a great learning curve, as he continues to cement himself as a consistent footballer.
Thilthorpe has experienced the highs and lows of AFL football since being selected with Pick No.2 at the 2020 National Draft, from booting five goals on debut against Hawthorn in 2021, to being left out of the side at various times to continue his development in the SANFL.
Speaking to Sauce and Thomo on The Crows Radio Show, Thilthorpe said he was feeling much more comfortable at AFL level in 2023.
“I do (feel a lot more comfortable at the level) but I’ve certainly learnt how up and down footy can be,” Thilthorpe said.
“My first game was a very special moment (kicking five goals) and I’m thrilled I got to experience that.
“But I think the next week (after my debut) I had six touches and didn’t kick a goal, so I definitely learnt that it’s not that easy.
“Over my first couple of seasons I was going a bit crazy with my pre-game preparation, so this year I’ve toned that down and overall I am just feeling a lot more comfortable.”
Since returning to the AFL team in Round Two, Thilthorpe has kicked 13 goals, while averaging 3.8 marks per game.
