Adelaide put on a dominant display in the second half to defeat Woodville-West Torrens by 23 points at Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing at half-time, Adelaide flipped the game in the second half, to win 13.17 (95) to 11.6 (72).

Here are the five key takeaways.

Newchurch’s hot start

Forward Tariek Newchurch got Adelaide off to the perfect start, being lethal in front of goals, booting the first three majors of the game.

Newchurch showed his ability to score from multiple positions, with his third goal the most impressive, converting a set shot from a tight angle against the boundary.

“I am happy for Tariek to get the result, they were nice goals as well, they weren’t easy ones which is pleasing,” SANFL Senior Coach Michael Godden said.

“It was great to see him hitting the scoreboard again and get that bit of confidence back.”

Newchurch finished the game with four goals, four marks and three tackles.

Schoenberg stars

Midfielder Harry Schoenberg continued his dominant State League form against Woodville-West Torrens, working both forward and back to provide an extra option for his teammates.

As well as being composed with ball in hand, he made the right decision when under pressure.

“He’s in a really good vein of form,” Godden said.

“He’s got areas that he is working on consistently to get back into the AFL and I say every week how pleased I am with his attitude and the way he goes about it.”

Schoenberg filled up the stat sheet, finishing with a game-high 33 disposals, 10 marks, game-high 10 clearances and seven inside 50s.

Midfielders leave their mark

Adelaide’s midfield brigade collectively put on a dominant performance against the Eagles, winning the clearance battle 43-19.

Getting silver service from ruckmen Kieran Strachan and Elliott Himmelberg, Matt Crouch (32 disposals, one goal), Sam Berry (23 disposals, eight clearances), Jackson Hately (23 disposals, four tackles) and Tyler Brown (20 disposals, eight inside 50s) all left their marks on the game, according to Godden.

“It was a big day for our midfield,” he said.

“I thought our midfield were really strong, led by Kieran who put the ball in really good areas for us.

“That gave us fair ascendancy because we were able to score off the back of a lot of them.”

Parnell's pin-point accuracy out of defence

Defender Patrick Parnell used the ball well when exiting out of Adelaide’s defence, with his accurate kicking an asset for the Crows.

Parnell started the game off strong, with Adelaide’s backline under pressure through the first half, however he was able to remain poised and rebound the ball effectively.

“Patty has been really strong for us,” Godden said.

“He is a player building his game as a small defender and he is understanding what to do and I thought he was really powerful off the half back line today.”

Parnell finished with 22 disposals, nine marks and five rebound 50s.

Solid return for McAdam and Bond

Adelaide’s clash with the Eagles was forward Shane McAdam and first-year player Hugh Bond's return to action from injury.

McAdam was at his trademark, high-flying best, delighting the Adelaide crowd taking a big hanger during the second term, along with kicking a goal late in the fourth quarter.

Bond spent the afternoon playing off half-back, where he showcased his strong tackling ability.

“I love Shane he plays with a great intensity, he is a great talent and it was nice to see him get through the game,” Godden said.

“He (Bond) is a young fella, it is really good education for him, he has had a long time out so it is really pleasing for him to get that opportunity to play.”

The game served as a curtain raiser to the AFL side’s clash with the West Coast Eagles.

Adelaide’s SANFL team will not play next week due to a mid-season bye.

The Crows will return to SANFL action the following week against South Adelaide at Noarlunga on Saturday, June 24 at 2:10pm.
