Adelaide Assistant Coach Scott Burns says the Crows have the right mix of experience, excitement and youth within its forward line, as the side edges closer to Round One.

The Crows completed their first competitive hit-out of 2023 with an intraclub trial in front of about 3000 Members and fans at Richmond Oval on Friday night.

Coaches were keen to replicate match conditions by switching up the scoreboard and swapping players across the two teams and in different positions.

Despite the changes, Iazk Rankine (five goals) and Taylor Walker (four goals) starred.

Speaking to the media post-game, Burns said he was impressed with how Rankine and Walker were also well supported by others in the forward line.

“It’s nice to have a forward line with some senior experience like Tex (Walker) and Fog (Darcy Fogarty) taking the next step like he did in the last half of last year,” Burns said.

“With (Josh) Rachele, (Jake) Soligo, those boys floating around as well, Pedlar was very good at times as well.

“He’s certainly a very good kick on goal and he can beat anyone.

“There’s a bit of talent up there - not just Izak - but also players in supporting roles who can be a handful as well.”

In his first game since injuring his ACL, former Skipper Rory Sloane was also solid, according to Burns.

“He’s (Sloane) been a long time on his legs now, he’s done all the match sim with us since post-Christmas,” Burns said.

“For him it’s just handy to get out there again and get amongst the ball in hand with a bit more heat and intensity.”

The Crows’ pre-season continues next week, with the side heading west to play in two practice matches in Western Australia - against Fremantle on February 24, before battling West Coast on March 3.

Burns said the coaches and staff were looking forward to using those two matches to fine tune skills, game plan and the opening round team.

“We really need to use the next two weeks for those proper match games instead of playing against ourselves.

“We play Freo and West Coast to really identify who can really help the team out in the first one to two rounds.

“When you go against an opposing AFL Club the intensity goes up a bit and at this stage we need the eight quarters to make sure we are cherry ripe for Round One.”
