New Adelaide draftee Billy Dowling says there is one key aspect that helped him land at the Crows’ nest.
And it’s something that he plans to continue to use as he strives to earn the respect of his new teammates.
“Just my workrate, that’s the most important thing for me,” Dowling told the media on Wednesday.
“I’m someone that works hard and I base my game off workrate.
“I try to get to as many contests as possible and fulfil a role for a team, whatever is necessary to help a team win.”
Adelaide selected the South Australian product with Pick No.43 at the AFL National Draft on Tuesday night, after trading its way back into the third round.
The former Roosters midfielder averaged 31 disposals, seven marks, five tackles, five clearances and six inside 50s throughout the SANFL season.
His Round 16 performance against Glenleg, in which he amassed 44 disposals and kicked four goals, was a highlight.
Dowling, who also captained his school team St Peter’s College, said being able to share the moment with his family and close friends would be something he won’t ever forget.
“I’m definitely over the moon, it’s been a whirlwind 24-hours and I’m really excited to be on board here at the Crows,” Dowling said.
“It’s a dream you have when you’re a little kid, so waking up this morning, I was still pinching myself and could not be more grateful and I’m just looking forward to cracking into it.
“When it happened, we just all jumped on each other, but I can’t really remember it because it happened so quickly.
“The emotions just overruled everyone in the room and it was so amazing to be a part of.”
Dowling said he had been quickly welcomed into the Crows family and was keen to make the Club proud.
“The boys are great, I met a few before, and they were really encouraging me to come out of my shell,” Dowling said.
“It was definitely a really exciting experience but at the end of the day they’re just guys and they get around you as a person and that’s the most important thing.
“I had some of the coaches pop around last night and that was an awesome experience, they just focused on me as a person and allowed me to soak it up.
“I think the young group is very energetic and they’re building something special, so I can’t wait to be part of it.”
