Adelaide utility Madison Newman has described Saturday's semi final against Collingwood as “bizarre”, after a severe thunderstorm caused havoc.
The Crows’ eventual 12-point victory over the Magpies at Unley Oval had plenty of drama, with a 30-minute delay to the start of the game due to lightning, followed by another 43-minute delay at quarter-time.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Newman lauded her teammates for remaining focused despite the uncertainty surrounding the weather, and proud to have walked away with a win.
“It was really bizarre but it was a good result in the end and we came away with the win, so we couldn’t be happier,” Newman said.
“It was quite a long day, we just had to be patient and wait for our time to go.
“We were all just in the changerooms trying to keep ourselves entertained.
“We had a few girls in different groups just chilling out and a few playing some games and just trying to keep ourselves entertained.
“It was really good because when we needed to go, we were focused and switched on, which was really pleasing.”
Newman was one of Adelaide’s standouts on the weekend, having amassed 19 disposals, five tackles and 248m gained.
The 20-year-old’s strong season was rewarded last week when she was named in the AFL Players’ Association AFLW 22Under22 Squad.
The defender/winger said consistency was the key this season, after being unable to cement a regular spot in the team during Season Six.
“It’s a good recognition for the hard work that I’ve put in for the past couple of years, especially,” Newman said.
“My contest work and learning a new position this year playing on the wing has been a really good opportunity for me.
“It was about staying fit in the off-season and getting stronger and being more confident in my body, that’s been the main thing.”
The reigning premiers will now battle Brisbane in a preliminary final on Friday night at Metricon Stadium, with the winner moving through to the Grand Final.
Newman expected the match against the Lions to be a tough battle but said the Crows were up for the challenge.
“They are obviously a really great side in great form and we’ll probably go in as underdogs but I don’t mind that,” Newman said.
“I think we’ll put up a really good fight against them.
“If we can run with them for four quarters, we’re in with a really good crack.”
