The Adelaide Football Club is supportive of a South Australian Government bid to host a festival of footy centred at Adelaide Oval next season.

It was revealed on Wednesday Premier Peter Malinauskas had approached the AFL with a proposal to showcase all nine AFL matches in a single round next year in Adelaide, as part of a one-state carnival.

Adelaide Chairman John Olsen said the Crows were in favour of the proposal.

“We are fully supportive of the State Government’s push to host a festival of footy here in Adelaide,” Olsen said.

“South Australia has a rich football history and a passion for the game that is unrivalled, and our Club will do all it can to assist with the bid.

“Our sport has the ability to bring people together and importantly, the intention is to involve the elite competition through to grassroots participants and leagues.”

Olsen said if successful, the bid would provide a huge boost for Members and supporters, as well as SA’s tourism and hospitality industries.

“There is the potential to engage with people in the city, suburbs and regional areas, along with the capacity to attract fans from across the country in a major boost to the tourism and hospitality industries,” Olsen said.

“It can also play a role in encouraging young people to participate in sport and benefit from the associated healthy lifestyle.

“While it would clearly be great for football fans in general, there would be far reaching benefits for the State.”
