Crows rally too late at Subi
The Adelaide Crows produced a late rally to salvage some pride, if not the four premiership points, against the West Coast Eagles at Subiaco Oval on Saturday ni
The Crows rattled on seven majors in the final term after having managed just four in the first three quarters, before going down 15.18 (108) to 11.10 (76).
Mark Ricciuto continued his terrific form for the Crows, while Andrew McLeod continued his good run, Tyson Stenglein worked hard and Robert Shirley was good early on West Coast star Chris Judd. Trent Hentschel bobbed up with four handy majors to be Adelaide's top-scorer.
Wayne Carey's last game in Perth, however, wasn't a special one for 'The King' with Darren Glass continuing his good form since his return from injury. Carey didn’t return after the long break due to a neck injury.
West Coast made the result safe in the third term, but they could have inflicted far more pain after a return of 4.8 for the quarter.
Callum Chambers turned on his best game of the season for the hosts, gathering 19 touches after starting on the bench.
Phil Matera shot back into form early with three goals in the first half on surprise back pocket Graham Johncock, while Andrew McDougall kicked one in each of the first two terms and competed well throughout the evening while Quinten Lynch was an interesting forward option.
Phil Matera shot back to form with a couple of goals in the first term, the first of the game after just five minutes and the last for the term after the siren, both from marks.
Andrew McDougall booted his first from a mark at 35 metres, while Daniel Kerr, who left the ground in the seventh minute with what looked like a shoulder injury, made the most of terrific defensive pressure from his forwards to snap one from 25.
The Crows took the ball the length of the ground for Mark Stevens to kick their only goal for the term.
Adelaide kicked the first of the second term after just four minutes to reduce the margin to 12 points, but then the scoring dried up and it wasn't until the 18th minute that Callum Chambers kicked West Coast's first for the term.
Matthew Bode replied four minutes later with a snap from 25 metres, but West Coast grabbed a couple in red time - one each to Matera and McDougall - to take a 50 to 24 point scoreline to the main break.
Judd grabbed two goals in three minutes to start the second half before Ashley Hansen put the third for the term through in the sixth minute.
Trent Hentschel scored one for the visitors after a quarter of an hour but Lynch replied a couple of minutes later before West Coast finished the term with five consecutive behinds to go to the last break up by 51 points.
Adelaide coach Gary Ayres said his side simply didn’t win enough one-on-one contests in attack to trouble the Eagles.
"West Coast beat our players one-on-one," he said.
"Carroll on Stevens beat him. Glass and Carey, the points would go to Glass, and Chick on Edwards, the points would go to Chick.
"You can pump the ball in, but if you are not winning it… I thought for most of the night they beat our players in one-on-one situations."
Ayres said he just told his players to try and enjoy their footy in the last term, when they showed their best form of the match.
"At three-quarter time, I basically said 'look, go and play like you would in under 14s' and that is just playing on instinct really," he said.
Ayres said he would continue to his best. Next Sunday, Adelaide is at home against the Western Bulldogs.
