CROWS rookie Matthew Wright is proving to be a valuable addition to the young Adelaide forward line.

Alongside team-mates including Taylor Walker, Jack Gunston, Ricky Henderson, Jared Petrenko and Kurt Tippett, Wright is trying to make the most of the AFL opportunities.

“I suppose if you had of said I would have played 16 games at the start of the year, you would take that straight away,” said Wright, who was elevated from the rookie list after a series of injuries to Crows early in the season and made his AFL debut in round four.

“But I’m at the stage now were I want to perform and do that consistently.”

Wright, 21, played the best game of his AFL career against Geelong on Sunday, amassing 25 disposals, 11 marks and two goals. He attributes his recent form to his weekly preparation.

“There is a lot of pressure that comes with playing AFL footy and I think the biggest pressure you get is from your peers,” he said.

“When they are playing good footy in the SANFL, it puts the extra pressure on you to perform and do everything right - recovery, train hard and set yourself up for the following week.”

Wright has had little problem finding his feet in the Adelaide side, his ability to take the game on, scout the packs and apply pressure to the opposition proving valuable.

“It’s a pretty young forward line so we all sort of bounce off each other which is good,” he said. “We’ve formed a pretty strong relationship, especially within the last month, and we’ve probably played a lot tighter and with a lot more care for each other.”

He attributes his success to focusing on his goals, some of which he shares with the entire squad.

“As a team we have our goals and we don’t want to just crawl to the finish line, we want to be up there and sprinting and taking it to the sides that we play in the remaining rounds,” Wright said.

“Individually my goal is to play out the rest of the year, but not only just play, perform and take my game up another step which is pretty important to me personally.”
