When Adelaide AFLW midfielder Hannah Button runs out onto Adelaide Oval on Saturday there will be a special group cheering her on.
Button has been balancing the books and the boots this AFLW season, working as a Year 3/4 teacher at Gilles St Primary School.
With COVID-19 cases rising in SA, Button has decided to step away from the classroom for the week to ensure she is fit for the Preliminary Final against Fremantle.
But that has not stopped her students from getting ready to cheer her and the Crows on by making good luck posters and drawings for their favourite teacher.
Button, who featured in Adelaide’s 2019 AFLW Premiership and last year’s Grand Final loss, said she was grateful for the school and the students’ support as she chased another flag.
“When I walked into the classroom the students were shouting out, “Go Mrs Button” and had made good luck posters for me,” Button said.
“To know that my students’ are excited about my football career is really motivating.
“I’m lucky to be a part of a supportive community at Gilles Street Primary where I know I have their support behind me.”
Button said having time off work in the lead up to the big game had allowed her to focus on getting her body and mind in the best shape possible.
“My preparation for this weekend looks a little different now that I’m not working at school, I’ve been able to come into the club and do some extra touch work,” Button said.
“It has been a long build-up to the Preliminary Final, so I’m just eager to get out there and hopefully make an impact.”
Adelaide will take on Fremantle in the AFLW Preliminary Final at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, April 2, at 2.10pm.
Entry into the match is free and no tickets are required.
The Preliminary Final is the last game of Adelaide Football Club’s historic weekend with the SANFL ‘Showdown’ at Adelaide Oval on Friday at 4.10pm, before the AFL side plays Port Adelaide at 7.50pm.
Tickets to the AFL Showdown are still available.
