There will be a celebration of Indigenous culture at Norwood Oval when Adelaide take on Collingwood in a special AFLW Round Nine clash.
After being scheduled to play interstate for the official AFLW Indigenous Round in Round Eight, Adelaide will celebrate Indigenous women participating at all levels of football in front of their home fans this weekend.
This game will mark the first time Adelaide will wear their yellow clash guernsey at home, proudly designed by Eastern Arrernte man Pat Caruso.
Thanks to BHP, Maranunggu and Anmatjerre woman and AFLW forward Danielle Ponter will present a Kuru coolamon, a multipurpose vessel used by men and women to carry water, resting babies in, grinding seeds for flour.
Dancers from Kuma Kaaru will perform a special dance to a rendition of Stand By Me, sung in traditional Kaurna language, before the Welcome to Country.
Twenty SANFLW Indigenous players will form a guard of honour as the players take to the field.
Players from the Port Augusta Female Football League will also attend the game as part of BHP’s ongoing support for the league.
The competition, which was established in 2020, has grown thanks to BHP’s support over the past 12 months, including coaching and mentoring visits from Crows AFLW captain Chelsea Randall and providing essential equipment, including goals, training vests, tackle and marking bags.
Outside the ground, there will be plenty to keep the kids entertained with skill activities and the BHP Colouring Wall, where families can learn more about the significance of our Indigenous guernsey.
Ponter said Indigenous Round is a special round in the AFLW fixture.
“Last round was incredible but it is really special that the Club wants to celebrate Indigenous Round at home in front of our supporters,” Ponter said.
“We were involved in the early stages of the guernsey design and are so proud of the final design that Pat has produced.
“I can’t wait to run out there with my team mates.”
Adelaide will face Collingwood at Norwood Oval on Sunday, March 6, with the first bounce at 2.40pm.
The match is proudly sponsored by BHP, are passionate and committed to inclusion, diversity and female empowerment, as well as giving back to regional communities.
Their longstanding community-focused partnership with the Adelaide Football Club enables both organisations to work with together to support grassroots and pathway development programs for young women and Indigenous people in regional areas.
