Adelaide has suffered a tough defeat at the hands of Brisbane in a gloomy trial match at Metricon Stadium on Friday.
The Lions dominated, finishing comfortable 89-point winners on the Gold Coast despite a great first game from Josh Rachele.
Adelaide’s top draft pick booted three goals in his first game for the Club, including two in the final term.
Although close in the first quarter, Brisbane broke away in the second - booting six goals to Adelaide’s one.
The Crows started the second half strong, booting back-to-back goals courtesy of Shane McAdam from 50 and a first goal for Rachele.
But Brisbane responded brutally, slotting the next seven goals of the quarter to lead by 68 points at the final break.
Unfortunately it was more of the same in the fourth, with the Lions extending their scoring run to nine goals in a row.
Rachele eventually broke the streak with his second of the game, a neat kick from 40m out before hammering home a 60m goal late in the term.
Senior assistant coach Scott Burns said although it was only pre-season, it was still a “tough day at the office”.
“It’s tough for supporters to see that scoreboard,” Burns said.
“But it’s pleasing to get those younger guys in and give them a taste of what AFL footy is.
“There’s still plenty to take out of the game.
“We played a side that has been top four the last three years. It’s good for the young players to play against them for the full four quarters.”
Despite the disappointing scoreline, Adelaide took some positives from the match.
Riley Thilthorpe booted two goals in the first half and Jimmy Rowe kicked a tidy goal off his left from the pocket.
Jake Soligo, in his first game for the Club, saw his fair share of the ball and combined with Rachele for the pair’s debut touches.
Beyond his goals, Rachele showed plenty of class and collected the ball across the ground.
Adelaide will face Port Adelaide next weekend in the Community Series ahead of Round One against Fremantle on March 18.
