The Crows will continue to help inspire South Australian students to pursue a career in science and maths following a significant boost to its STEMfooty program.
The Adelaide Crows Foundation has received a $100,000 grant from the Department of Innovation and Skills to deliver the program to more than 2000 Year Seven students this year.
STEMfooty combines classroom learning with hands-on experiences to introduce students to the maths and science principles which underpin football on and off the field – including kicking trajectory, tackle zones and nutrition.
The 10-week in-school program is free for participating schools and can be delivered in person or online, offering flexibility for teachers and students.
While there has been significant growth in STEM-related jobs, there has been a continued decline in student engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
STEMfooty Manager Katie Gloede said introducing students to a program like this at the start of high schools is important.
“The program really challenges the students to consider what a science or maths profession looks like,” Gloede said.
“Introducing them to these new ideas opens a world of possibilities for their future and hopefully encourages them to continue to prioritise STEM subjects through the rest of their education.
“This aligns with what the Government of South Australia are trying to achieve, and we are thrilled to have their support.
“It has been a challenging start to the year for Year Seven teachers and students, but the schools we are working with have all told us that having a program like this has given their students a big lift.
“The program is fully booked for 2022, but we encourage schools who would like to be involved in 2023 and beyond to register their interest now.”
Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni said STEM skills are essential for children to develop while at school, inspiring new ideas and exciting future careers.
“The STEMfooty program does an excellent job at engaging students in STEM learning through the familiar and fun lens of AFL,” Minister Pisoni.
“The Marshall Government is delighted to support the continuation of this activity, encouraging students to consider the real-life applications of their studies.”
Schools wishing to register their interest for participating in the program in 2023 are encouraged to contact stemfooty@afc.com.au
