Coach Brenton Sanderson says Adelaide’s forward line continues to evolve, as the Club tries to find the right mix of players to support star goalkicker Taylor Walker.
Walker kicked three of the Crows’ 11 goals in the Round One loss to Essendon. Midfielder/forward Richard Douglas (two) was the home team’s only other multiple goalkicker. Ian Callinan, who missed the season-opener with a knee injury, in-form utility Tom Lynch, ruck/forward option Shaun McKernan and third tall Lewis Johnston are among Adelaide's foward line options at the selection table.
Sanderson said he would consider tinkering with the attack ahead of the clash with the Brisbane Lions on Saturday.
“We’ll keep looking at what adjustments we need to make to make the team better,” Sanderson said.
“It’s about what gives us the best result; is that two talls or three talls? Maybe, one tall and five, quicker smalls. Does Ricky Henderson play forward or back? Does Graham Johncock go forward or back?
“Last year when we went to the Gabba we took three talls. We kicked 6.7 in the first quarter and then lost the game. We couldn’t defend Brisbane running the ball out of our forward 50m, so there are positives and negatives when it comes to three talls.
“We’ll keep talking about it and try to get the mix right.”
Both the Crows and Lions will be looking to record their first wins of 2013 this week after disappointing round one losses. Adelaide wasted a fast start against the Bombers to lose by 35 points, while the Lions were completely outplayed by the Western Bulldogs.
Sanderson said he expected a “hot” game at the Gabba.
“I’ve really liked Brisbane from what I’ve seen this year, particularly through the NAB Cup. Like us, they’ll be hurting a bit from a disappointing result against the Western Bulldogs,” he said.
“Our boys are keen to make amends for what was a disappointing result against the Bombers. I don’t want to lose two in a row - fortunately, we didn’t experience that last year. The competition is so tight and we’ve seen that with some of the results already in round one. You can’t afford to keep dropping games.
“It’s (only) Round Two, but it’s really important we get a win this week and Brisbane will be thinking the same. They can’t afford to start 0-2 either. This game becomes so critical for us.
“I’m sure we’ll see a lot better, more even performance from the Lions this week. They’re a quality young side and I’m sure they’ll bounce back really hard. We have to make sure we do the same thing.”
Sanderson said the Club had used a two-week break between games to focus on a few key areas of improvement, including tackling, centre clearances and transition between defence and attack.
“We’ve had a really good week-and-a-half of coaching,” he said.
“We’ve done our very best in the extended time between games to work on some areas we were poor in against Essendon and we hope to make an improvement.
“The game will come around eventually … it just feels like it’s been a long time coming.”
