The Adelaide Football Club has thrown its support behind a worthy cause, helping the bushfire-ravaged Adelaide Hills community while doing its bit for the environment.

The Toyota Tree Day initiative, created by Toyota and Planet Ark, hopes to educate the nation on the value and importance of preserving the environment.

This year, its focus is on the Adelaide Hills community which is slowly recovering following the devastating bushfires that ravaged the area in 2019.

As part of Toyota Tree Day, Lobethal Primary School students are planting trees to replace those that were destroyed - with help from the Crows.

Covid-19 prevented players from visiting the school and helping students replant so, instead, they have been packing boxes of trees to send to the students.

Crows defender Tom Doedee said he was pleased to be involved in Toyota Tree Day and support the school.

“Hopefully these little care packages can help them out and lift their spirits a little bit,” Doedee told AFC Media.

“They’ve gone through a bit and I think this is the least we can do.”

Lobethal Primary Principal Toni Burford said the school would be showcased as part of a gardening festival later this year, which would form part of the bushfire response.

“We had about four or five families who lost everything, their homes, but beyond that, there were a lot of people that were affected with their businesses,” she said.

“Even though we had that terrible event, it’s actually united us more as a school and a community.”
