Adelaide legend Mark Ricciuto has revealed he wrote “Voss” on his bedroom mirror for inspiration in the mid 2000s.
Ricciuto told AFC’s The History Locker: Hall of Fame podcast that former Lion Michael Voss provided a goal during Adelaide’s strong 2005 and 2006 seasons.
“Would I have loved another Premiership being greedy as captain? Absolutely, that was my dream for the last four or five years,” Ricciuto said.
“I had the word ‘Voss’ on my bedroom mirror and people probably thought, ‘did you love Vossy?’.
“I idolised what he’d done, being a triple Premiership captain, that was my last goal, be a Premiership captain.”
Ricciuto also had space on the mirror for a poem he still lives by and has shared with Adelaide’s young players since.
“I had a poem called Man in the Glass,” he said.
“I told a couple of the young players, it’s a good thing to keep yourself accountable.
“The man in the glass is about everyday looking at yourself in the mirror and looking back into your own eyes and saying ‘I know I did everything I could to be as good as I could’.
“I think it’s a great thing for footballers, at the end of the day you’re only cheating yourself. It’s a good little check for people to follow.”
In the debut episode of The History Locker: Hall of Fame, Ricciuto also discussed his struggles with missing the 1997 Grand Final, his Brownlow win following a personal tragedy and his belief in the Crows’ 2021 crop.
